Meanwhile—in a secret
location somewhere in the general vicinity of California:
The door to a room opened,
and a man came in. “I have the report
from 597, sir.”
A man in a yellow-tan suit
swiveled around in his office chair.
“597’s report, please.”
“The CIA sent someone to
take Pearson’s place.”
The man in yellow
straightened. “We expected that,” he
said. “Who?”
“Man going by John Hallett. Married.
Four children, all present with him.
Officially a lawyer helping Mr. Blaine buy a golf course, but 597 caught
on to the disguise right away.”
“How?”
“It was easy, sir. Hallett’s the only new guest to show up since
Pearson exited.”
“I suppose you’re right,”
said the man. “What do you know about
him?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“We couldn’t find anything
about him on the CIA website.”
The man in yellow banged his
fist. “He must be on the part our
hackers can’t get to,” he said.
“Wife. Four kids. What a disguise. No ordinary operative would ever suspect
him…but we are no ordinary operatives.”
“597 wants to know what to
do with him.”
The man in yellow looked
up. “What to do with him? Leave him for now, observe him. Give him a chance to get acquainted with the
place. Then, once he starts to get
dangerous, we’ll erase him. Understand?”
“To hear is to obey. I shall notify 597 right away.”
“Do that.”
The messenger nodded and
went out the door. The man in yellow
responded by removing his tie and loosening his collar. “Boy, it’s hot in here,” he said. “Maintenance!” he barked into a radio. “Fix the stupid air conditioner already!”
